Absorbent Porous Paper Reveals How Earthquakes Could be Mitigated

چکیده

Earthquakes nucleate when large amounts of elastic energy, stored in the earth's crust, are suddenly released due to abrupt sliding over a fault. Fluid injections can reactivate existing seismogenic faults and induce/trigger earthquakes by increasing fluid pressure. Here we develop an analogous experimental system simultaneously loaded wetted absorbent porous paper quantify theoretically process wetting-induced earthquakes. This strategy allows us gradually release energy provoking low intensity tremors. We identify key parameters that control outcome applied injection strategy, which include initial stress state, fault segmentation, segment-activation rate. Subsequent injections, initiated at high levels, drive faster toward its instability point, nucleating earthquake. Starting however, they reduce magnitude natural event least one unit.

How the WTO Could Be Improved

AbstractThis paper examines the impasse in the current Doha Development Round negotiations andasks how the rules of the WTO could be changed to facilitate multilateral negotiations andto increase the welfare of the Member countries. It considers possible changes to the methodof negotiation. As examples of rules which are outdated, it considers the rules relating toregional trade agreements and ...

How Cognition Could Be Computing

In this reply to James H. Fetzer’s “Minds and Machines: Limits to Simulations of Thought and Action”, the author argues that computationalism should not be the view that (human) cognition is computation, but that it should be the view that cognition (simpliciter) is computable. It follows that computationalism can be true even if (human) cognition is not the result of computations in the brain....

How Composition Could be Identity

The paper argues that, as far as logic and abstract metaphysics go, the claim that composition is identity could be true, despite wellmotivated arguments against the coherence of the claim. The key to answering the arguments is to reject a principle of universal substitutivity of “identical” plural expressions while retaining Leibniz’ Law, that identicals have the same properties, relations, an...

How Dim Accreting Black Holes Could Be?

Recent hydrodynamical simulations of radiatively inefficient black hole accretion flows with low viscosity have demonstrated that these flows differ significantly from those described by an advection-dominated model. The black hole flows are advectiondominated only in their inner parts, but convectively dominated at radii R ∼ > 10RG. In such flows, the radiative output comes mostly from the con...
